FOODINI
August 2021 — Sept 2021
Foodini is a food service app that helps connect people with food allergens to restaurants and businesses that fits within the dietary profile.
OBJECTIVES & GOALS
Foodini's goal is to allow customers to have a faster, easier, safer and enjoyable dining experience regardless of their dietary needs. And to accomplish this goal, the objective of this month-based project was for Foodini to gain user acquisition and retention by updating their existing app to include a number of additional features. These features included conducting a group search, creating digital allergy cards, referring a friend and adding onboarding tutorials to educate users about the functions and benefits of the app.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
To understand how to improve and implement the existing features for Foodini, I looked into competitors that accomplished a similar goal and draw inspiration or use some of the insights as a point of differentiation.
Find Me Gluten Free: The app provides celiac safe restaurants and best gluten-free menu matches for users.
Equal Eats: Provides 36 pre-set digital allergy cards that can be custom and translated to 50 different languages.
Allergy Eats: Provides peer-based ratings on restaurant accommodations to food-allergic guests.
Grubhub: Provides freemium rewards under their “Perks” and “Earn” tab.
UberEats: Distinguishes restaurants and grocery items clearly through UI display, providing logos of grocery stores instead of images.
DoorDash: Offers take-out & delivery services from restaurants, local grocery stores and convenience stores. Great for group orders, delivery and pick ups.
With Foodini's app already being free to use, adding a freemium subscription model
was an option to consider to implement the additional features.
Why add a freemium model?
Freemium business model can help grow a business instantly through advocacy.
Offering this option could be an easy way for users to get an experience the value of your product and hopefully, increase attention through word-of-mouth.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Foodini is looking to implement a freemium subscription model that offer users additional features at a price. How will those features be implemented with the current design of the app?
There is currently no way for users on the app to perform a group search. How will users see their individual restaurant matches along with the group's matches without overcrowding the design?
Users have no way of presenting their allergies through digital allergy cards. Is there a way for users to carry digital allergy cards and present them at restaurants through the app?
People struggle to tell the difference between online meal delivery businesses and restaurants on the app. Is there a way to clarify the difference?
Currently, there is no way for users to differentiate between online meal delivery businesses and restaurants that are registered on the app. Is there a way to add in a feature without altering the UI or changing the categories?
As a user, I want to be able to see which restaurants offer menu items that match me and my group's food allergies and dietary restrictions in order to eat together at the same restaurant.
As a user, I want to be able to highlight my personal food allergies and restrictions in order to enjoy a safe and healthy meal.
As a user, I want to filter out my options between meal delivery service and restaurants to save time ordering meals.

USABILITY TESTING OVERVIEW
01
Subscribing to premium membership
Insight: All 3 users went straight to "My Account" to get to the premium subscription and overlooked the banner. There was no issue locating where the premium subscription can be found; however, users mentioned they overlooked the "Refer A Friend" banner on the homepage and perceived them as ads.
Potential Solutions:
-
Have a "learn more" or CTA buttons on the banners
-
Have the banner stand out more
-
Have the copy be more catchy
02
Distinguishing between Restaurants
and Online Delivery/Meal Kits
Insight: Two out of three participants had trouble understanding the categories, particularly because restaurants and online delivery/meal kits are not mutual exclusive
Potential Solutions:
-
Conduct a mini survey or testing on possible verbiage
-
Have a direct and clear search options
03
Conduct Group Searches
Insight: Users didn't press "select" in the group search drawer and went straight ahead to clicking on the users. Two out of three users didn't know what the numbers meant in the group search results.
Potential Solutions:
-
Remove "select" from the group search drawer
-
Add the word "matches" in the restaurant cards to indicate to the user that the numbers are matches.
04
Digital Allergy Cards
Insight: Finds it as a hassle to navigate multiple allergy cards.
Doesn't want the server or staff swiping or holding on to their phone for a long time. No point in clicking "View Card" if all the information is already on the screen.
Potential Solutions:
-
Lists out all allergies on a single card
-
Provide an overview of allergies listed in the DAC home screen (ex. Milk, Eggs, Peanuts). Clicking on "View Card" will open an overlay card with allergy specifics listed, for viewing only.
OVERVIEW
Based from the user testing, there was some minor UI changes that needed to be fixed to the features.
During the time period of this project, each features were proposed and presented to client, Dylan McDonnell and he was satisfied with the overall results of the user testing.
